There are several reasons why you might need to find an alternative to commercial lubricant. Sometimes you just ran out of lube and don’t have enough time to get one before the sexy time will happen. Or maybe you’re just young and don’t want to try lube but don’t want your parents to find out. Whatever the reason, here we will go through all the options to use as lube that you might find at home.

Before we start, we want to let you know that using actual lube is always best. The lubricant manufacturers put effort in developing the products, many of them even engage in clinical tests to make sure their products are safe and effective. Using a household item is no way better than using real lube, so use them only as a last resort.

Egg Whites

Egg whites have a high contain of protein (albumin), just like that of sperm and they will create a mucus-like consistency.

Pros

Generally healthy. Very slick consistency. They increase the chances of fertility, due to its protein contents.

Cons

The consistency is runny and you might encounter spillage. Make sure the eggs you use are fresh and refrigerated, since egg whites may contain salmonella, which can cause infections in your vagina. Not thick enough for anal sex.

Acceptable for: Vaginal sex, Toys.

Coconut Oil

Coconut oil has antifungal properties and it’s a great moisturizer, used for several beauty purposes as well as for cooking. Make sure you use virgin coconut oil with no added ingredients. Check out our dedicated article to coconut oil.

Pros

Easy to apply, as you just need to rub it in your hands. Nice scent (if you don’t mind it). Very slick and slippery, will leave your skin super soft. Great padding for rough sex.

Cons

It’s hard to clean from some fabrics. Will leave a coat inside your vaginal /anal cavities, clogging its pores, which will increase the risk of irritation and infections in the long term. Coconut oil might get rid of both good and bad bacteria in your vagina. You won’t be able to have safe sex, because coconut oil (as most oils) damages condoms.

Acceptable for: Vaginal sex, Anal sex, Masturbation, Body Massage.

Caution: Not compatible with condoms.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is another all natural option from your kitchen. This one shares some characteristics with coconut oil. The best one to use is virgin olive oil and with no other ingredients added. Also, make sure it’s fresh, and not rancid.

Pros

Very slick and provides great lubrication. Natural product with no dangerous chemicals.

Cons

It has a runny consistency, and it might get spilled and hard to clean from fabric. This one also might leave a coat on your skin and clog your pores, especially dangerous for the internal tissue of your vagina. It’s not compatible with condoms, so you should only use it with a trusted partner. The scent is not good, you might find it undesirable for sex, even though this might vary depending on the brand.

Acceptable for: Vaginal sex, Anal sex, Masturbation, Body Massage.

Caution: Not compatible with condoms.

Yogurt

Yogurt is an old home remedy for vaginal yeast infections, the pH balance and probiotics in it can help your vagina to develop healthy bacteria. Believe it or not, this ingredient can be used as lubricant, with healthy effects as we described, but you need to be very careful not to use yogurt containing sugar or any flavors, since the effect will be the opposite.

Pros

Good for your vagina, helps to fight infections.

Cons

It will stain your bed sheets, you will need to clean them after. Doesn’t provide enough padding for anal sex.

Acceptable for: Vaginal sex, Masturbation.

Butter

Butter, margarine, nut butter, all those can be rubbed in your hands and melted into oil. Many people talk about using butter as lube, but we believe they are just joking, this is our least recommended option.

Pros

Nice consistency, super slick and provides good lubrication. Easy to apply and no spillage.

Cons

After some time, it will get greasy and sticky, and will be super hard to clean, some stains might be permanent in fabric. Butter sometimes have other added ingredients, it can’t be counted as a natural option and it’s hardly healthy for the vagina or anus, as it might increase the risk of growing bacteria inside. Not compatible with condoms either.

Acceptable for: Masturbation.

Caution: Not compatible with condoms.

Aloe Vera Lotion

Aloe vera lotion is a product you might have at home and use for your skin. It has skin-regenerating effects and will help fight yeast infections. This can be used as lube too, aloe vera is indeed a popular ingredient in proper lubes.

Pros

Gently with your skin, good consistency.

Cons

Aloe vera lotions vary a lot, some of them might contain other ingredients that might irritate your intimate parts, use it only if it’s a good product that never irritates your skin. Not very slick and doesn’t last long, you will need to re-apply.

Acceptable for: Vaginal sex, Anal sex, Masturbation, Toys, Body Massage.

Vaseline

A petroleum based lubricant that is used for several purposes in the beauty industry.

Pros

The consistency is super thick, and will make sex super slippery. Easy to apply and no spillage problems. It has a neutral smell that won’t bother you. Lasts a long time. Good for water play.

Cons

It might be hard to clean from fabric. It’s not healthy for your skin, it will clog pores even more than vegetable oils and increases the risk of bacterial infections. Also, it will degrade condoms.

Acceptable for: Vaginal sex, Anal sex, Masturbation, Body Massage.

Caution: Not compatible with condoms.

Baby Oil

Baby oil is widely used as lube, because of its consistency and since it’s for babies we think it can’t do any harm, but it’s even worse than vegetable oils.

Pros

Very slick and slippery, good lubricant effect. Being oil based, it lasts a very long time. Most of them smell good.

Cons

It’s not very healthy, since it’s generally based in mineral oil, which will leave a coat inside of your vagina or anus, allowing bacteria to grow. It might stain some fabrics and it’s hard to clean. Not compatible with any sort of condoms or silicone toys.

Acceptable for: Vaginal sex, Anal sex, Masturbation, Body Massage.

Caution: Not compatible with condoms.

Lotions

Lotions and body creams might seem similar to lube and you might think they are a good idea to use as lube, but they are not good for vaginas at all.

Pros

Many of the lotions have a nice consistency and make your skin really soft. They also smell good and are available in most homes.

Cons

They generally have a number of chemicals and added fragrances that can surely irritate your intimate skin and increase the risk of infections or allergies. They are not made for intimate use so the outcome might be unexpected.

Acceptable for: Masturbation, Body Massage.

Caution: We don’t know if they are compatible with condoms, it depends on the specific ingredients.

Soap or Shampoo

Men sometimes use soap or shampoo in the shower for masturbation, and that’s good for this purpose, but while these products might be good for cleaning, they are not likely to do any good inside of your body.

Pros

Some of them have a good consistency and smell good.

Cons

It will likely irritate the skin inside your vagina or anus. People that have used soap or shampoo for this purpose report feeling a burning sensation. We don’t recommend it for vaginal or anal sex as it might irritate and hurt you.

Acceptable for: Masturbation.

Saliva

This is the oldest traditional method of lubrication, and also the cheapest. You see it a lot in porn, when they spit some saliva and it all seems to work well, but it doesn’t in real life.

Pros

It’s natural and you can use it an any time.

Cons

The lubricious effect is pretty mild, hardly good for anal sex. It gets dry very fast too. If you have a sore throat you might be passing the infection to the vagina too. Use this only as a very last resort.

Acceptable for: Vaginal sex, Masturbation.

Don't use these household products in a regular basis! As we said, we recommend to always use healthy options of lube such as those listed as best vaginal lubes or best anal lubes, since they are especially designed to be quite effective and good for you.
